OLD RULES VERSUS NEW RULES ON HOW TO STYLE A PLUS SIZE WOMAN

A visit to the mall will make you think fashionable clothes are made for skinny girls only; with the size of modeling mannequins. Fashion is not about the size, it is about the attitude. It is possible to be plus size and still look breathtakingly gorgeous. It’s not what size you wear but how you wear your size that matters. Being curvy doesn’t mean you can’t look fashionable. According to Iris Apfel; ‘Dress to please yourself, listen to your inner muse and take a chance. Wear something that says, here I am!’ Looking chic does not require a killer waist or one that is almost non-existent, it requires you to be willing to step outside your comfort zone.

Let’s dispute some old rules on styling plus size women, shall we!

1. The old rule says NEVER WEAR WHITE.

The new rule says: Wear what fits. ‘The key to a flattering garment comes down to fit, not color’ says celebrity stylist Susan Moses. “White does not make you look larger if you find the right pieces, just as black will not make you look smaller if it doesn’t fit properly,” says Moses.

When shopping for white clothing, pick materials with substance and structure. They will provide support and the extra thickness will make sure your undergarments won’t show under a bright light.

2. The old rule says BUTTON DOWN SHIRTS ARE UNFLATTERING.

The new rule says: Button-down shirts complement curves. You can go plain or you can look for one that has stretch and design details that create shape, like darts, ruching, and wrapping. If you desire a more slenderizing silhouette, layer the shirt under a cardigan, blazer or a jacket to shrink the appearance of your midsection and elongate you. Pair with cool pants or a pair of denim to rock.

Do not be hemmed in by rules. Button down shirts.

3. The old rule says: PRINTS & BRIGHT COLORS WILL MAKE YOU LOOK BIGGER.

The new rule says: Prints and bright colors will not call unnecessary attention to your body. “There are no rules when it comes to color—just make sure it complements your complexion,” says Amy Spivok-Richman, a Macy’s group vice-president who oversees the plus-size category for the department store. If the cloth fit and flatter your shape it will be slimming no matter how bright the color is. For prints, ensure they are not too big or too tiny. They’ll be perfect if they are in proportion to the scale of the body.

Print pants.  Jacket.

Print dresses.

Have fun with bright colors.

4. The Old Rule says: FOLLOWING TRENDS IS TOO RISKY. STICK TO THE BASICS.

The new rule says: If it floats your boat, by all means go for it. Adapt to a trend in a way that works for your shape, that is the trick. Are you dying to wear that crop top? Go for one with a longer cut and pair it with a high-waisted pencil skirt. You Want to try color-blocking? If the vertical panels and darker shades are positioned on the areas that you want to downplay, wearing multi-toned pieces can be slimming.
