DRESSING FOR SUMMER

Summer is here! It’s all about dresses when the temps rise. You want to look amazing. Everything about looking tasteful and expensive boils down to the fabric and the cut. Choose your fabric very well to get a good result. Wrong choice, and you’re just as miserable as if you’re wearing acetate-lined tropical wool trousers or look like you’re dressed in a paper bag or ready for a Mai Tai.

Luckily this spring, there’s a ton of dress styles that are perfect for the workplace as well as rising temperatures. Some I’ve seen online that would be perfect for the workplace.

Every one of these dresses can be found here and they are all on sale.

SHIRT DRESS

A Shirt dress can take you from day to night and back. They’re perfect for wearing on a casual basis, but can also be suited to more formal occasions. Keep it knee to midi length to be office-appropriate and style it with a more professional shoe (wedge, fun flats, pumps).

FIT DRESS

A fit dress is a cool cut that adds versatility to your wardrobe. It is perfect for almost any occasion; for the office it’s important to consider fabric, print, and length. Keep it between just above the knee to upper calf. Keep the dressy fabrics (shantung, chiffon overlay) and the very casual fabrics (eyelet, denim) for your weekend activities and focus on prints that are more appropriate for the office (softer florals, stripes, watercolor prints, dots) instead of those for a garden wedding (cabbage roses, very bright prints).

WHAT NOT TO WEAR TO THE OFFICE DURING SUMMER

MAXI DRESSES:

A maxi dress is a pure resort wear and not an office wear. Since an office and a resort are basically mortal enemies. It doesn’t not matter if you style it up with a pump, wedge or even a jacket,  a maxi dress is a Turks and Caicos outfit.

FLIP FLOPS:

Flip flops are not for the office. Unless it’s specifically stated in your company’s dress code that flip flops are ok, or if a senior leader wears them too. Flip flops are not ok unless you are on a beach or getting a pedicure.

CROP TOP:

No one wants to see your belly button or bra straps at work. Well they might, but neither is appropriate. A crop top is not an office wear unless you will take your skirt way up to the crop top, if not crop top is good if you can play a tennis ball in them.

SHORTS:

Shorts are cool but they belong no where near the office. Even if it’s the office picnic, please do not wear shorts. Truth is, whatever inappropriate choice you make for the company picnic will be discussed in the hallways the next day.

FLOPPY HAT:

Floppy hat is not an office wear. Hats are a perfect accessory and great for those sunny days on the beach.

SHEER OUTFIT:

Avoid wearing anything sheer, unless you have something that’s not sheer underneath it.

DO NOT BARE:

Open backs, rising hems, plunging neckline are inappropriate for the office, if you want to wear a sleeveless top pair it with a pant instead of shorts to work. Pairing with a short can be ok for your girls day out not an office.

SHOES:

Shoe is a peice that can update your look and add a little personality to your outfit.  You can wear an open-toe shoes as long as your feet are clean and manicured.
